Letter by John Cavafy to C. P. Cavafy
[Alexandria] 19 August 1884
My dear Constantine,
I am glad to hear you are all well and I write to say the same of myself and Peter. Mr. Moss, as I wrote you last mail, arrived here on the 5th and you can assure mother that his conduct towards me is unchanged: viz. the usual Sunday dinners and the prospect of going to stay with him for a short time in Ramlé. But I have long since sickened of these, and find little profit, if any, in meaningless profusions of endearment. ’Tis true however that if I were out of my present employ I should find nothing better, so Ihold my peace and bide my time.
Aristides tells you in his letter of the late demonstration of indemnity-claimants. It was a sight at once amusing and imposing: some people estimate the numbers at 6.000 and others at 1.000 ― All shops, offices and the Bourse were closed, and the streets reminded me very much of what they used to be a few days after the massacre.
With best love to mother and brothers
Yours devotedly
John.
