  • [Via] Khedivieh steamer

    [Alexandria] 6 November 1883

My dear Constantine,        I have yours 28 October. At last we have re-     mitted you the £ 100 and I daresay the money is now     in your hands: as promised, I gave Aristides, to send     you in his letter, a detailed account of the expenses     incurred, and trust you will find some in good order.     The balance, some £ 21 odd, I have locked up safely.     We are also sending you by this mail a cheque for £ 10.     I see from the newspapers that Mr. Leonidas Balthaggi     has lately returned to Constantinople from Vienna.     Is Alexander going to stay on the chance of getting     employed with him, or will he come out at once?     The question naturally suggests itself, seeing that so     long a lapse of time, since you gave us the authority
to raise the money, has elapsed: and that, during     the period, Alexander may have changed his mind.     In any case, I am prepared to meet the next Aus-     trian steamer arriving from Constantinopoli.     Moss arrived the 2nd instant and is staying at his     old quarters the “Beau Séjour” Ramleh ― I am     invited to spend a few days there with him from     this evening: an invitation which ― you may     suppose ― I am not likely to refuse. Mr. Moss     tells me that he has great faith in the influence     of Mr. Whitley (M.P. for Liverpool) as regards the natu

The news conveyed to me in your letter are very nice: and I can sympathize with the maxim from the Book of the Abbé *** The Cholera has again subsided: deaths are now confined to 3 or 4 daily. There is not the least rea- son for alarm; we are all well and hearty. Many, many kisses for mother, Alexander and Paul and for Constantine the unvarying affection of           his devoted brother                John.
