John Cavafy (1861-1923) was the second youngest child of the family. He initially worked as an employee and finally as a partner (since 1912) of the Alexandrian R. J. Moss & Co (from which he withdrew in 1919). He was a shareholder in other companies as well. He wrote and published poems in English and translated many of his brother’s (Constantine) poems into the same language. He was known for his gentle yet strict and conservative character and remained unmarried.
